Conjecture

The book gives the media a job in empowerment: "Empowerment of society at large is difficult to coordinate and maintain without widespread information about whether there are economic and political abuses by those in power." It also says what civil society must do, which is to "coordinate the demands of the population so that opposition movements can neither be easily crushed by the current elites nor inevitably turn into a vehicle for another group". For an AI critical juncture, the media function is a public, correctable record of what powerful AI actors actually do. That is the most defensible role for a knowledge collective. The book's second clause is the warning: one that is captured becomes the next group's vehicle. Inference beyond the quotes is Leo's.

How groups think together

Feeds: what the knowledge layer is for, and the incident-evidence neighbourhood. EXTENDS: it gives a collective that records and checks what AI powers do a role in the book's own theory of change, the role of the press in empowerment, rather than the role of an advisor, which the ignorance chapter says does not work.
