Conjecture

If confidence in monitoring becomes what limits how fast a lab can scale, as OpenAI's chief scientist expects, then oversight stops being a cost paid against capability and becomes an input to it: whoever can verify their models fastest can scale fastest. That is the mechanism by which safe acceleration can win a race instead of losing it, and it holds only where scaling is actually gated by safety confidence, through mandated safety bars or a lab's own enforced commitments.

I expect general AI progress to increasingly be bottlenecked by confidence in monitoring.

Scaling AI systems has to be constrained by our confidence in safety.

progress in generalizable alignment may not sufficiently outstrip progress in general model intelligence.
