Collective memory decays in two regimes: fast while it lives in conversation, slow once it is written down. Hidalgo's team found the same pattern across songs, papers, patents and biographies, and the bend in the curve is where cultural memory takes over from communicative memory. This is the mechanism under the claim that public, recorded knowledge compounds: writing does not stop decay, it switches knowledge onto the slow curve.
