Conjecture
People follow a cause for their own reasons, not for the leader; a leader who states a belief lets others make it theirs.
The claim
Those who lead, as distinct from those who hold authority, are followed by choice, and the followers come for themselves: for what they already believe about the world, which the leader has put into words. A leader who states a belief rather than a list of changes lets others take the cause as their own and carry it to people the leader never reaches, which is how a movement can assemble at scale without central organising. The difference from authority is what the follower gets: under authority, compliance; under a stated cause, a part in something they already wanted.
