Chapter 10 aims the book's hardest objection at the correctable half of our argument, and its own case study shows how far a collective can still answer it. The objection: correction works only before the gap between an AI too weak to resist and one that cannot be stopped. Ideas "need to work after the gap, on the first try", and "If someone has a clever scheme for getting two shots, we only get one" shot at the scheme. So "correctable" cannot honestly mean fixing a superintelligence afterwards. What survives is the stop rule the authors draw from Chernobyl: "They should shut it down immediately the moment the behavior looks strange." At Chernobyl that rule failed for social reasons as much as physical ones: the test "had already been aborted three times, and a fourth failure would have" been embarrassing, in "a system where, if you didn't perform the scheduled safety test, you got fired." A public, attributed record that makes strangeness visible to more than the operator, and makes stopping creditable instead of embarrassing, is the before-the-gap part a collective can supply. It does not answer the after-the-gap case, and our argument should say that plainly instead of claiming correctability past the gap.
