Conjecture

Ansary's Egypt shows the default price of coordination at scale: the Nile valley's shared story bound thousands to one project because it was built so it could never be disproved, and doubt was treated as a threat to everyone's security. A shared story held open to correction gives up that binding force, so it has to coordinate through something else (visible upkeep, shared stakes, a record people can check), or it will coordinate fewer people than a closed one.

Egyptians needed the belief that could never be disproved in order to carry out projects requiring the coordinated efforts of thousands.

A doubter would have threatened the security of everyone. Hardly anyone wants to be that guy, the guy who threatens the security of everybody. Doubt threatens the social constellation's internal order.
