Conjecture
The name a blended civilisation is given credits its dominant parent and drops the others, so naming the whole is a credit decision. Ansary's ch. 19: "The recovering native population brought themes from their pre-Columbian cultures into the civilizations emerging south of the Rio Grande," producing "a uniquely American civilization of world scale." Yet "This is commonly known as Latin America, and its culture is usually called Hispanic, a name that makes no nod to the pre-Columbian themes in the weave." The same chapter has Africa and Latin America "subsumed into a larger world story as peripheries of a center." Clay's step: when the collective names a plex, a project or a result built by many, the name is where credit is first lost; it should be chosen as deliberately as an attribution.
