What decides a person's part beside a machine is which one serves the other: a tool helps a person do something, while a machine does something and people help it. Once production is organised around the machine, people become parts whose value is computed as a wage, and their hours, meals and bodies are re-timed to its synchrony. Ansary, ch. 23: "Tools help us humans do stuff. Machines do stuff, and we humans help them do it"; in the factory "People merely pulled the levers that made them work"; on the plantation laborers "were parts"; "the value of each part could be calculated mathematically, as a wage"; workers "had to subordinate their biological selves to the logic of the machine"; and "Tools are always nested in some worldview."
