Redacting a roadmap is a fair safety reason, so verify through a trusted checker, and never skip the safety-compute check.
The claim
A lab's reason to redact acceleration evidence (not handing rivals a roadmap) is a real safety reason, so verification cannot rest on publication: it needs a channel where the verifier sees the evidence and the public sees a checked verdict, and the capabilities-versus-safety compute split is the one check pacing commitments cannot do without.

Less extensive redactions would greatly reduce this need for trust.

It's very important, because it is the foundation on which pacing verification depends.

But we determined that sharing exactly what is driving the speedup isn’t the right thing to do, both because it’s commercially sensitive and because it risks handing out a roadmap for others to go faster.

We redacted a lot, and I accept that this makes it harder for others to check METR’s work.
