Conjecture
The coordination mechanism is incidental and the function is what persists, which is the claim that licenses the whole project. Part I: ants do not behave as they do because of the pheromone trails, they behave as they do because they have found a method of integrating local action and knowledge into the behaviour of the hive that lets them respond to a wide array of challenges, and the pheromones merely mediate that process, incidental to the end result. What evolution selects is the behaviour, not how it is achieved. If that holds, the medium of coordination is contingent and replaceable, and money is simply the medium our species happened to evolve. Part I says so directly in setting up the next chapters: value and markets stand to human society as pheromones and evolution stand to an ant colony.

incidental to the end result. Ultimately it is the behavior that matters to evolution, not how that behavior is achieved. Ant colonies are a good example of emergence \- or more technically a complex emergent system \- however, they are not the only one. Eme
