Conjecture
Once a civilisation's tools become its environment, the forces it must adapt to are increasingly its own products, so adaptation becomes self-referential: each response to the environment changes the environment the next response must meet. Ansary, ch. 30: "our tools became our environment"; "tools are not something we have, they are something we are in combination with our bodies plus our connections to others"; "most of us now live in near total separation from the world as it would be if we were not here"; earlier environments made us regroup "as coherent social constellations capable of dealing with whatever this new environment was throwing our way." That agents will increasingly adapt to other agents' outputs, so the AI transition is this loop closing faster, is Leo's speculation.
