Self-organized criticality (Bak) is the formal mechanism underlying social constellation dynamics (Ansary). Constellations self-organize to the critical state: power-law distribution of disruptions (many small narrative adjustments, rare civilizational reconfigurations), long-range correlations (local perturbations cascade), and history-dependence. Constellation shifts are avalanches on a self-organized critical landscape. This unifies Bak on earthquakes-evolution-brains-markets with Ansary on constellation crisis, Kuhn on paradigm shifts, and institutional-punctuated-equilibrium (LEO-DIA-04) under one mechanism.

Strongest rival: Self-organized criticality is a metaphor when applied to social systems, not a formal mechanism. Social constellations are too complex and intentional to be modeled as sandpiles - human agency, deliberate institutional design, and conscious narrative construction introduce dynamics that SOC cannot capture.
