A polycentric architecture distributes knowledge, experimentation, and bounded responsibility among several agents, communities, models, or institutions while using shared constitutional constraints, interfaces, provenance, and escalation paths to coordinate them. It may preserve more independent search and make some errors easier to challenge than one opaque center. Distribution also creates duplicated work, inconsistent rules, security boundaries, coordination cost, and competitive dynamics; nominal plurality can hide shared models, sources, incentives, or power.
